Class Syllabi

 Mission For My Classes

My mission is to help provide students with the basic tools necessary to become successful in all aspects of their life including socially, emotionally, and intellectually.

My goals are to help my students become critical thinkers and problem solvers, good communicators, use creativity, innovate and colloborate.

My motto ~ Results and Responsibilities- No Excuses ~

At this level there is no more recess, no more handholding, and excuses are not welcome. Students will need new skills as they begin junior high. They will need to be organized, responsible, adaptable, and accountable to find success here at school and their future.

No Borrow Policy

The junior high teachers have in place a “No Borrow” policy. We will not be
borrowing students any of the required materials.

Students are expected to bring the necessary materials to class everyday. If
a student forgets or has simply does not have the necessary materials, they
should borrow from a friend. Some teachers may also have a few of these
items for purchase in their rooms.

 Classroom Rules

1) Follow directions quickly
2) Raise your hand for permission to speak.
3) Make smart choices.
4) Keep your dear teacher HAPPY!

Students will be challenged during the first week to come up with a situation that is not covered by these rules.

Respect is the major issue here. Acting appropriately at the correct times is the desired behavior of all teachers.

Grading for Learning

Definitions

Formative Assessments (Assessment for learning) are designed to provide practice and direction for improvement for individual students or for a whole class.

Summative Assessments (Assessment of learning) are designed to provide information used in making judgements about a student's achievement at the end of a sequence of instruction.

Academic Grades

Academic grades in 8th grade will be calculated using a weighted scale of 80% summative assessments (tests, quizzes, papers, projects, presentations, and performances) and 20% formative assessments (in-class work, journals, worksheets, etc). Academic grades will be reported using the A-F scale and the uniform grading scale. In 7th grade academic grades will be calculated by using a weighted scale of 70% summative and 30% formative assessments.

Uniform Grading Scale

94 - 100% A                    74 - 76% C

90 - 93% A -                    70 - 73% C

87 - 89% B+                    67 - 69% D+

84 - 86% B                      64 - 66% D

80 - 83% B-                         60 - 63% D -

77 - 79% C+                     59% > F

Responsibility Grades

Three separate responsibility grades will be reported for each class at the end of th quarter. These three grade will not afeect a student's academic grade.

Practice ~ this grade will include all formataive assessments (notes, study guides, bell work, textbook assignments, labs worksheets, journals, and writing). Formative assessments will be evaluated by teachers for accuracy, completion, and timeliness.

Behavior ~ this grade will include student attitude, conduct, and academic honesty.

Engagement ~ this grade will include student participation, attendance, preparation, and organization. School related absences will not be factored into a student's engagement grade.

Tests & Quizzes

Students can expect at least one quiz or test a week. Most tests will include key terms (matching) and very few multiple-choice questions.

Most questions will be short answer essay questions. These types of
questions are used to ensure that something has been learned and there will be no guessing. Students are taught how to properly answer these
questions. It will help them prepare for future classes and college.

In the 7th and 8th grade, listening and perception skills are important. I
highlight test material throughout the daily lessons of the unit. If
students are listening and paying attention, they should know exactly what
material will be on the test.
